Very Fun To Watch! (2009-01-06) Rating: 5/5
If you don't mind sexual scenes and graphic humor, you will like this show. If you happen to like sexual scenes and graphic humor, you will LOVE this show! Basically, within the first three minutes of the pilot episode, if you like the first scene, you will fall in love with this season.

I had a blast watching the show! I have not seen the main character in anything for a long time, but it seems like he was an even better match for this role than he was for the X-files a decade or so ago. His daughter and his ex are great co-stars. You have got to love his agent and his friends. I cannot remember a show where the co-stars add this much to the drama and the plot, but I loved it!

This show is a breath of fresh air compared to the mindless dribble on network TV. Be prepared because it is not for everyone. Our 21 year old daughter is even uncomfortable watching this program with us. If the subject of "Sex , Drugs and Rock n' Roll" bothers you ; steer clear.
No subtitles, Part II (2008-12-08) Rating: 1/5
Someone else already noted the lack of subtitles (see "No subtitles" comment), though Amazon claims the disc is "dubbed." This is unacceptable (given that even non-hearing impaired folks make use of them when they want to keep the volume down). Instead, Showtime employed closed captioning (cheapskates!). Yet not all DVDs and/or TV sets can display CC, and, if either device you own won't display them, you're out of luck. And setting up the feature for DVDs, in any case, is far from easy or intuitive. After all of this, the displayed info doesn't tell you if the CC type is "Line 21," "SDH," or what. So, given that this isn't Gone With The Wind, the DVD gets one star from me, as the CC BS requires more fuss than the series is worth. By the way, at the start of the DVD, you're forced to watch Showtime advertising with options to skip or fast forward blocked.
A New series for David Duchovny (2008-11-10) Rating: 5/5
right now i am going through weeds withdrawl waiting for season 4 to come out on dvd. when californication first came out, i thought i would not like it. david is most famous for his role as fox mulder on the X-files, but in this role, he has moved beyond chasing aliens and looking for his sister, samantha. he really shines as hank moody. after watching season one, he is trying to be a good father to his daughter, becca, and at the same time, trying to woo becca's mother, karen. the humor and the wit shine through and punctuate the series. i am not going to ruin the season ending, but when you watch the "last waltz," episode 12, you will be cheering.

I wasn't quite prepared for the nudity and the language, however, when I got past it, I found the show to be excellent. The plot line is superb. It's supposed to be a comedy-drama but I found it to be very sad. I'm a David Duchovny fan and, although the Hank Moody character is so different from Fox Mulder, Duchovny is a superb actor and he's still gorgeous at the age of 48. I'm not sure yet if I will order the second season.
